Starting or running a business in Bangalore comes with more than finding a good location and getting customers. If your business falls under the trades that require a municipal license, operating without one can create compliance problems later, especially during inspections or renewal.
The process can also feel confusing because Bangalore’s civic administration has changed. The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and five city corporations now handle civic administration, but people still commonly search for a BBMP trade license, and the official system continues to provide Trade License and Trade License Renewal services.
A trade license is permission from the local civic authority to run a specific business from a particular location. Whether you need one depends on the type of business you run and where it operates.
Shops, restaurants, workshops, manufacturing units, and other businesses may need a trade license under local rules. However, a trade license doesn’t replace other approvals your business may need, such as GST registration, FSSAI registration, building approvals or fire-safety permissions.
In 2026, the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) lists Trade License and Trade License Renewal among its online services. So, while many people still search for “BBMP trade license” or “trade license BBMP,” the current civic system comes under the GBA and its five city corporations.
If you need a license, the next step is to keep your documents ready. This can make the application process easier and reduce the chances of delays.
The documents you need for a BBMP trade license depend on the type of business and the premises where you operate. For a new application, the official trade license instructions list the following documents and details.
You may need:
The published instructions state that supporting documents can be uploaded in JPG or PDF format, with a maximum file size of 1 MB.
Before starting the application, check that your documents are clear, valid, and ready to upload. This can help you complete the form without unnecessary delays.
For an existing license, the trade license renewal online process is based on your previous application number. The official renewal instructions ask applicants to search using the previous application number, review the displayed trade details, and select the renewal period.
Here is the usual process:
| Renewal period | Penalty |
|---|---|
| Up to February 28, 2026 | No penalty |
| March 1 to March 31, 2026 | 25% of the license fee |
| From April 1, 2026 | 100% of the license fee |
For 2026–27, businesses could renew for one to five financial years through the online system or the specified Canara Bank challan process. Since the February 28 deadline has passed, check the current payable amount, including any applicable penalty, before renewing.
These dates apply specifically to the 2026–27 cycle, so check the latest notice for future renewal periods.
| Business / Trade | Published fee |
|---|---|
| Small food retail shop, under 100 sq. ft. | ₹250 |
| Food retail shop, 100–500 sq. ft. | ₹500 |
| Supermarket | ₹10,000 |
| Ready-to-eat or processed food manufacturer | ₹20,000 |
| Edible oil retail | ₹2,000 |
| Edible oil wholesale | ₹3,000 |
You can check your application status online using your application number. After your application is approved, you can also download the trade license certificate from the same system.
To check your status:
| Registration or approval | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Trade license | Permission to carry out a specific trade from a particular premises. |
| GST registration | GST compliance and tax-related requirements, where applicable. |
| FSSAI license or registration | Food safety compliance for eligible food businesses. |
| Shops and Establishments registration | Applicable rules for commercial establishments and employees. |
| Fire safety approval | Fire safety requirements for premises where applicable. |
| Building or occupancy approval | Compliance with applicable building and property use requirements. |
Getting a trade license in Bangalore becomes easier when your business details, documents, and trade classification are accurate from the start.
